A pilot project for Lithodomos VR, “Hadrian’s Arch PhotoScan for the Oculus Rift: a Virtual Reality Project” was completed by Lithodomos VR in 2015, with the financial support of the AK-MED Suna&İnan Kıraç Research Institute on Mediterranean Civilisations, in Antalya, Turkey.
The project commenced with a high resolution scan of the arch, between the 13th and 19th of July, 2015. The next phase involved creating a draft mesh from the images to test the initial scan for accuracy. A second documentation phase was completed on site from the 3rd to the 9th of August 2015. New images were captured based on the draft mesh in order to minimise gaps and increase accuracy. A workflow was refined in order to quickly create an accurate mesh and textures from the high quality scan. Once the mesh was processed with photogrammetry, it was transferred for a final touch-up and a prototype Virtual Reality environment was created featuring the arch for use on siten with the Oculus Rift.
